Statement of Philosophy

Hokkaido Information University is a university that has incorporated the word “information” in its name to symbolize its role as a leader in this era of borderless information, brought about by the emergence of the new IT society. Furthermore, our goal is to nurture individual talent that can adapt and respond to the needs of the times, and create an academic field that leads the way in the development of an advanced information and telecommunication society.
Situated on the outskirts of Sapporo, Japan’s fifth largest city, our campus is surrounded by the wonderful natural environment of Nopporo Primeval Forest, a symbol of the Hokkaido frontier. Our educational objective is to contribute to the continued development of an IT society as a “comprehensive information based university” that will both seize opportunities and open up possibilities of information utilization, both now and in the future.

Educational Rationale

Information technology has become an intrinsic part of the society and this applies to all walks of life and all peoples in the 21st century. Recognizing this, the goal of education at our university is to foster highly skilled IT professionals who have learned how to understand and apply IT technology appropriate for the needs of tomorrow’s advanced information and telecommunication society. This is successfully implemented by providing a comprehensive education that extends from general liberal arts to numerous, advanced specialized fields. Moreover, we also aim to foster highly talented and creative individuals who are equipped with sensibility, morality, international awareness and communications skills, thereby creating not only information specialists, but valuable members of society.
